1. Stop Using Needlessly Complicated Words
Don’t get me wrong, I love words. But equally, I love it when people understand what I’m trying to say. And because of that, I know my choice of words is important.
A mistake that a lot of people make is thinking that using bigger words will improve their writing. Whether they think it will add more authority, or that it will make them seem more intelligent, it simply isn’t the case.
In fact, using complex words, for the sake of using complex words, will have a negative impact on your writing.
There are times, however, where specialist terminology in unavoidable. If you write blog content about technology or finance, for example, you will inevitably have to use more complicated words from time to time. There’s nothing wrong with that. However, you need to be sure that the rest of your content is written in an easy-to-understand way.
As a general rule of thumb, it’s been suggested that an ideal reading difficulty for blog posts should be around 8th grade (13 – 14 year old) level.
In summary: K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple, Stupid! Put the thesaurus down and try to stick to words that are easy for your readers to understand.
2. Understand Passive & Active Voice
If you’re anything like me, active and passive voice will drive you crazy. To this day, I still have to work hard to get it right. But it’s worth it.
In short, active voice is where the subject of the sentence is doing the verb.
For example: “The dog is barking at a cat”.
Passive voice is where the verb is being done by the subject of the sentence. Confused? You’re not the only one. But the example below should make it more clear.
For example: “A cat is being barked at by the dog”.
Why is this important?
There’s no doubt about it, active voice is punchier. It’s snappy and straight to the point. It’s easy to follow; easy to understand. That’s why you should write the vast majority of your content in the active voice.
You will, occasionally, have no choice but to use passive voice. That’s fine. As long as around 90% of your blog post is in active voice, you’ll be well away.
If, like me, you struggle working out what’s active and what’s passive at times, try a tool like Yoast or Grammarly.
In Summary: Be aware of active and passive voice. Try and limit your use of passive voice to 10% of your blog post.
3. Properly Structure Your Pages
Aside from the words you write, the way you structure your blog post is also important. There are two main reasons for this.
The first is that it makes it easier for people to read.
If your blog post looks like a solid wall of text, people will not read it. It’s as simple as that. They will take one look, think ‘this looks like hard work’ and go to another website for the information they’re seeking. White space on the page is a good thing.
As well as this, making use of headings and subheadings is also essential for giving your reader an easy and enjoyable experience. People often skim read to find the information they’re looking for quickly. By splitting your blog posts into clearly labeled sections, you will help your readers to do this.
Headings and subheadings are also important for something else too; they help search engines read the page.
There are six levels of HTML headings that you can use in your blog posts. These range from <h1> through to <h6>.
<h1> is used for the main title on the page. <h2> is used for your main subheadings. <h3> is used for less important subheadings, and so on.
Getting these right is important when it comes to Google understanding what’s on the page. And that’s why it’s worth taking the time to get the hang of how to use HTML header tags correctly.
In summary: Make use of proper page structure. Remember, white space is your friend. Take time to ensure you’ve used the right headings in the right places.
4. Write For Humans
SEO: it’s important. Everybody knows that. But don’t let it hurt the quality of your content. While it’s important for search engines to understand what you’ve written (which tip #3 will help you with!), ultimately, it will be HUMANS who read your blog posts.
And that’s why humans should be your first consideration when you write anything.
SEO has changed in recent years. Back in the day, you could write a short blog post on a certain topic and, regardless of quality, if it used the right keywords enough, there was a good chance it’d rank highly.
But now, Google’s algorithm considers much more than it used to. It can tell low quality, keyword-stuffed blog posts from well-written, value-adding content. And you should be aiming for the latter.
Google even say this themselves. So how do you give yourself the best chance of ranking on search engines, while giving your readers the most fulfilling experience possible at the same time?
Write blog posts that cover specific topics; blog posts that answer questions and deliver insightful information. You should include keywords, but include them in a natural way. As long as content quality and reader experience are priority, you can’t go far wrong.
